SPORTS AT MOKOIA

FIFTH ANNUAL GATHERING. RUGBY SHIELD TO STRATFORD. CONCLUDING RESULTS. The inclement weather which threatened to mar the enjoyment of the Mokola Sports yesterday was happily dispelled early in the afternoon, and the subsequent portion of the programme was presented under favourable conditions before a gathering of about 1200. Excellent organisation, r-eflc-ctinp; -much credit on the -association president (Mr. D. S. Richardson), the secretary (Mr. Ivan G. Smenton), and the officials combining with them, was maintained. Thirteen teams competed in the seven-a-side for the association's challenge shield, the Stratford 11 team proving the winners, while, as run-ners-up. the Ohangai A seven took the Cann Challenge Cup. Each player of the shield winning team receives a gold medal, and silver medals go to the cup winners. Neither the Wharexoa- Club (the shield winners of last year) nor Pukengahu (the' runners-up) "fielded a team yesterday. Two trophies were won outright during the day. Mr. F. IV. Atkins, of Normanbv, whose candidate Prince Paul secured the award last year of the Rennett and Sutton Cup in the open ’ hunters’ competition, was again successful with the same candidate Fester-day, and under the terms of the award the trophy becomes his property. The other trophy won outright was "the Lane Cup for most points in all events, which was annexed by Mr. S. J. Tidswell, of Mokoia, who took the award yesterday with 18J points, and who had two previous wins to his credit. With 13 points Mr. H. Phillips was the runner-up yesterday. Mr. Tidswell also wins the president’s gold medal presented each year to the cup winner.

The association’s gold medal ’ for most points in athletic events was also won by Mr. Tidswell with a tally of 111. Mr. Phillips being the runnernp with eight points. The Hawera Highland Pipe Band, under Drum-Major .J. Nairn, was in attendance throughout the afternoon, and rendered appreciated items. Much, appreciative comment was also expressed concerning the activities of a committee of ladies who conducted the luncheon and afternoon tea booth and a confectionery stall. The latter was in charge of Mrs. S. J. Tidswell and the Misses J. and E. Lander, and sendee at the booth was given by Mesdames D. S. Richardson, J. Irv*ine > G. Cooper, H. Legge, E. Montague, S. Neithe, T. Hey, E. Nickel, T. Smeaton, E. Langley, G. Quinn, G. MacMillan, W. Rotbery, W. Stevenson. B. Lee. R. Lee, N. Lee and F. Holden, and the Misses Agostinolli i a rid Quinn. The proceeds from the stall and booth are to be devoted to a fund being raised to provide dressing shelters on the Mokoia. beach. Ohangai A 3 v. M a nut alii nil. The second round opened with a hard game between Ohangai A and Manutahi, the only points coming from a good run by J. Hinga, who went over for a- try in the corner. Mr A. Spratt was the referee. Fraser Road A 3 v. High School nil. Though ceding a big handicap in weight .-the School seven had the better of the exchanges in a swift contest which left the score unopened when the allotted ten minutes' ended. An extra (two minutes, during which the School lost Sturrock as the result A:' an injury, found honours still even, but-with the next change over the extra man advantage al'-owed New-all. Ohangai A opened the semi-finals by sorely pressing Fraser Road A, hut the Blues’ dogged defence, in which Notmau was the principal agent, kept the ipio iinfract. Two spells of ten minutes each were played. Stratford made the first assault. Landers and O’Shea being called on for good clearances. In the next- few seconds Hancock -raced down the touchline only to be grassed with a fine t-aek ie by Hines, and an interception by Lee and punt by Savage put Ohangai in the attack. Just on full time Landers made a. brilliant dash from half-way, hut after evading three tackiers, was collared near the line by Phillips. From the mix-up Cunningham dribbled over and Landers followed to score. Tree’s kick struck the post and fell infield and -the final score showed : Stratford 11. Ohangai 3. Mr F. Atkins was the referee. Messrs S. Thrush and A. R. Egar officiated as stewards during the, tourney, and Mr W. Rothei-y ns timekeeper.
