At the It o)’a 1 Commission inquiring into civic affairs, Mr Shand stated that he had been instructed that money had been deposited in connection with tenders for other than the power-house work, but not actually passed. He added that he was too friendly with the latter to demand a receipt, and never feared that there would ever be a dispute over the money, as he always trusted Air Alaling. He did not at any time suspect that there was anything wrong in the transactions. Questioned regarding the terms he was on with Miss Gordon that he was prepared to allow her to handle thousands of pounds of another man’s money, lie said he knew her to be a good, honest girl, and she was always at liberty to act for him on his instructions from Melbourne.

In reply to further, questions, Albert ■said Aliss Gordon was employed as a housekeeper by others, but lie had absolute confidence in her probity.
