SPORTS AT MOKOIA

FIFTH ANNUAL GATHERING. SETTLERS’ ASSOCIATION FIXTURE ATTRACTIVE EVENTS LISTED. Despite a cloudy sky and intermittent rain which, heralded the opening this morning of the fifth annual sports meeting of the Alokoia and District Settlers’ Sports- Association, the commencement of the programme found a fair gathering, running into hundreds of spectators, assembled on the picturesque “Pines” enclosure placed at the disposal of the association 'by' its popular president, Air D. S. Richardson. Athletic contests, horse competitions, ear driving and novelty events were featured on the lengthy programme, while the seven-a-side Rugby tourney for the association’s handsome shield and the Cairn Cup proved a powerful magnet of attraction to spectators and teams* representative of a wide area of the province. x Though softened by rain the tracks were in comparatively good order, and to give attention to the administrative details a competent band of officials was listed -to combine with the president and the secretary (Air Ivan G. Snieaton). Messrs R. Phillips, H. H. Legge and E. Nickel were judges of the athletic events. Alessrs J. S. Barkla and T. Hey were starters and handicaps were announced by Air A. Langley. The stewards were Alessrs A. T. Tidswell, N. W. Lee, C. Ritchie, N. Hunt, G. Lander, H. Bell, J. Lee, A. Phillips, F. Hunt, D. AlacAlillan and J. Tregea. Air R. Church was announcer. All* W. AlcL ’Dotvie, of Alatapu, was judge of the horse events, and the stewards in this section were Alessrs G. Milne, A. Aletoe, R. Phillips, C. B. Lee, W. R. Lee, D. Wards, E. Nickel, T. P. Magan and T. Porcy*. Alessrs W. A. Spragg and P. E. Rastell were judges of the car competitions.
