ALLEGATIONS DENIED
PROCURING A CONTRACT.
THE SYDNEY INVESTIGATION. BRITISH FIRM’S STATEMENT. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—OOPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, May 14. Newspapers are giving prominence to allegations of corruption during the Labour regime in Sydney, made before the Royal Commission investigating the municipal power-house contracts. The ‘•Daily Chronicle” informed the London office of Babcock and Wilcox of the nature of the cabled statements. The deputy-general manager promptly denied the allegations of bribery. He stated : This is the first we have heard of it and shall cable to our Sydney manager for full details. Meanwhile we are glad to publish our emphatic denial. We have never done anything of the sort, either in Australia or anywhere else There must be some mistake. It is true we secured the contract, and are now fulfilling it, but it is untrue that we paid anyone £IO,OOO for it. Those are not our business methods. We take a most serious view of the allegations and shall take up the matter immediately.”
