''From Our Own Correspondent.) GOLF. The golf season has now started in earnest, and the local club lias a greatly increased membership, especially lady members, this season. The standard of play has shown an improvement already, and some good cards have been returned. .There seems to be a very kfieu interest taken by Ihe junior men members, of whom there arc (jnite a number this season, and later on, when they begin to improve their play, some good cards should be returned. Mr. J. W. Boss, the club's coach, is on his return visit, and will be here for several days. Although the weather was not all that could lie desired, there were quite a. number of ladies taking part in the .mixed foursomes during last week-end. The best card was returned by Miss Ansley and J. B. Wilson, with a score of 88 gross and 72 net. On Monday night last a meeting of the club was held to make final arrangements for the coming ball. A strong ladies’ committee was set up, and it is hoped that it will be even a greater success than last year’s. Playing at the ninth green oil the local golf links on Sunday afternoon Miss Hotter holed out in one FOOTBALL. The local club have made arrangements with the Town Board to instai two electric lights on the stand at the Domain to afford light for night trailing. The senior players are putting Ui tsome hard training, and should turn out a strong team against Hawera on Wednesday. This is the first senior fixture to be played on the local ground this season, and all the supporters who were not fortunate enough to be at Patea. are looking forward to seeing the team in action for the first time. The juniors are all fit, and with the addition of Smith, who played senior last year, should make a strong team, although not" as yet showing the standard of last season. The first match for the Des Forges Cup will be played on Wednesday, when Opunake play Oaonui. The cup was won by Opunake last season, and is competed for by third grade teams from Kuhotu, Oaonui, Opunake High School, and Opunake. BIBLE CLASS SOCIAL.

A well-attended Methodist .Bible Class social was hold in the supperroom of the Town Hall on Wednesday evening last. Representatives were present from the Okato, Rahotu and Pilianui Bible Classes. Supper was provided for the Bible Class members ?jud an enjoyable evening was spent by all present. FEDERAL BAND. At the annual meeting and “smoko” of the Opunake Federal Band on Monday night last the following officers were elected: President, Mr. G . H. Hutton ; vice-presidents, Messrs. P. Dalrymple and C. M. Clare; bandmaster, Mr. J. Humphries; drummajor. Mr. IV. Bell; band sergeant, Mr. L. Des Forges; hand l corpora U Air. C. Cave; secretary, Mr. C. H. Humphries; treasurer, Mr. A. A. Fisher; committee. Messrs. P. Harding, J. Trotter, T. Maindonald, H. Parkes, T. Quin and P.- M. Brooker. The bandmaster and secretary were granted honorariums of £lO 10s and£s os respectively. The Auroa. Pipe Band was present, and gave a selection, which was enjoyed by all. Other items were contributed during the evening, and' the function closed with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” HOCKEY. A meeting is to be'-held shortly to form a ladies’ hockey club. There are quite- a number of players in the town, and a strong club should be formed. PERSONAL. Nurse Ansley, of the staff of the local hospital, has completed her engagement. and leaves on Monday for Manaia. She is succeeded by Nurse Craig, of New Plymouth. ; Mrs. J. N. Stephenson is at present staying in New Plymouth. Mr. A. Raynor is progressing favourably after his operation. Mrs. W. Triplow, of Wellington, is spending a. holiday with. Rev. and 'Mrs. Preston.
