SHAMMING MADNESS.

BROWNE’S LATEST RUSE. DETECTED BY THE DOCTORS. (UNITED TriESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Received 12.45 p.m to-day. LONDON, Alay 3. Browne, one of the men condemned for the murder of Constable Gutteridge, is at present shamming madness, apparently with the idea of obtaining a transference to Broadmoor criminal asylum. He never ceases to storm and rave. He asserted from the beginning that he woidd not wear other than his own clothes, with the result that since his conviction he has not worn any. Doctors, however, can easily recognise a real madman from a malingerer, and thus Browne is reported to he fully responsible. It is interesting to recall that Kennedy, while awaiting trial at Brixton, pretended that he was suffering from general paralysis and was insane. He assumed the role of a wealthy man, and signed cheques for thousandis of pounds.
