DOMINION AFFAIRS. AtFATING OF N.Z. UNION. [BY TEr.EGIIAPtir —PIIESB ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Alay 3. In his presidential address to the New Zealand Rugby Union to-day Air. Alanoy (Motueka) referred to tlie death of Sid 'Roland Hill, ‘'the grand old man of Rugby football.” Mr. Alanoy said the last year had been one of continued progress. Its outstanding feature was the selection of the All Blacks for South Africa after most exhaustive senior trials. The progress of the team would be watched with great interest, but whether New Zealand won or lost, all trusted that the games would, he played in a friendly spirit and would have a great effect from an Imperial standpoint. The Dominion’s request for an Imperial Rugby Board was supported by the English Rugby Union, but was turned down by the International Board. It was to be hoped that the board would be made to realise the importance of the proposition and would give the Dominions a voice in the government of the game. The board, had refused an invitation for a British team to tour New South Wales and New Zealand in 1930, 'out the English Rugby Union had happily stepped into the breach, and other Home unions would not stop their players joining the team. It was very gratifying fo know that Rugby in New South Wales was making a recovery and tlie sucees achieved by; the Waratahs would do much to spread the game to other States, Air. Alanoy continued. » Although the Afaori tour of New Zealand last year had not been a success, it was appreciated very much by the minor unions. The finances of the union were in a healthy condition, assets over liabilities being £17,786 6s lid. In conclusion, Air. Alanoy impressed upon the major unions the importance of giving more assistance to minor unions by playingmore matches with them.
