HAWERA COMPETITIONS.
REVISING THE SCHEDULE. A public meeting of those interested in the Hawera competitions was held last evening in the Borough Chambers, Mr. F. W. Horner presiding over a fair attendance. The meeting was called chiefly lor die purpose of going through last -season’s schedule with the view to improving the programme of competitions or this year. Considerable discussion took place, litli the result that the schedule foi 1923 will be most comprehensive. Several classes competed for formally have been deleted, and with the addition of several events which have proved more popular and successful in the larger cities, the competitions for this season promise to be well contested and patronised. The musical portion of this year’s programme will be greatly improved, a class for “instrumental trio/’ and a class for a “mouth organ solo” being included. The elocutionary section will also be considerably improved, and it vras denied to fall in line with the Wellington Society, re the question of eliminiting certain songs and elocutionary terns Avhich have become unsatisfactory through constant repitition in previous years. The items to be disallowed AA’ill be published in conjunction Avith the forthcoming schedule. National and characteristic dancing will play a prominent part, and the various classes in this section Avill undergo a thorough overhaul by the committee in order to provide a series of classes Avhich Avill appeal to all sections of the dancing community, and uoAude more even contests.
During the competitions to be held Mi is season, there will be 72 events in the various classes as under: Instrumental- section 12, _ vocal music 24, elocution 20, and dancing 16. “It .has been found necessary to eliminate the weaker classes in’ all sections, and to ,include those which have met with success in other centres,” said the chairman.
