CHIMES FOR THE TOWN CLOCK.
(To the Editor). Sir, —In your issue, of Monday appeared a. letter oyer it he signature of “Tempu.s” urging the desirability of having erected chimes in the town e’oek tower. Whilst recognising that chimes add perhaps some dignity to a. town, tliev have their disadvantages if continued a, l night, a,s lias been the experience in large towns. So' great a nuisance have they proved to peopleliving in the vicinity in some places that appeals have been: lodged with the civic authorities, and the chimes stopped after midnight. There have bqen large demands made upon the Government to improve the conditions of the local Post - Office of late, and these, it is understood, are to be carried out in the near future. Therefore it would be unreasonable' at the present juncture.—T am, etc..
