Nelson was chosen as the meeting for the next triennial session of the Anglican General Synod, to commence on .February 5, 1931. 'The Kakaramea sports, which were to have been held /to-day, have b:Co postponed till next Wednesday. The dance will be held to-night. A resolution was carried at Tuesday’s session of the General Synod at Wellington that it be a recommendation to the Diocesan Synods that the minimum stipend for vicars, whether of parishes or parochial districts, should be £3-50 per annum, in addition to a house and reasonable travelling expenses. Mr. T. K. Sidey has definitely announced his candidature for Dunedin South in the interests of the United Party. Mr. James Horn, M.P. for Wakatipu, will contest that seat under the same banner. Mr. W. Wright, M.A., an ex-president of the Otago Motor Club, will be a United Party candidate for a city electorate. Messrs Stevenson and Cook, of Port Chalmers, have secured the contract lor the C. A. Larsen repairs at £IO,OOO. Most of the work will be temporary, the only permanent part being the repair of the extensive holes at the bow of the steamer. The work is to he completed in three weeks, and 150 men will be working day and night shifts. The vessel then goes to Norway for permanent repairs. The tramways manager at Auckland, in a statement to the Transport Commission at Auckland, said that the revenue estimated to have been lost through bus competition, including reduced receipts through low fares for the three years from April 1, 1924, to March 31, 1927, was £202,763. At the Eltliam Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr R. W. Tate, R.M., judgment for plaintiff by default was given in an undefended civil claim, Newton King, Ltd., v. L. A. McCracken for £4B 16s 9d.

Farmers grazing' sheep in the vicinity of the South Soad, Hawera, complain that there has been a great deal of sheep-worrving by dogs recently. Within the last few weeks one farmer has had 20 sheep badly mauled. A warning has been given by some of the property owners that stray dogs found on their land will be destroyed. The Hawera Orchestral Society has fixed the first concert of the 1928 season for Monday, June 4, in the Opera House. The programme will be one of the best yet submitted by the society and will include classical and popular numbers that will appeal to all tastes. A new feature wil be the guest, conductor items, when Mr C. Lester, conductor of the Stratford Operatic Society, wil direct some of the numbers.

Reports from New Plymouth show that the position at the Power House has been much improved by the placing into operation of the Diessel engines, which increased the voltage by three hundred kilowatts. The lighting and tram services were curtailed till yesterday, but it was hoped to give full service from to-day. f .

An entry was effected by boring 1-1 inch holes in a door. Footmarks showed that two men were at work and they had probably used a car to carry off the proceeds of the robbery.

In order to cope with increased maintenance costs, the Auckland Hospital Board has decided to increase the levy on local authorities for the coming jear to .30d in the £l, oompared with .2od for the past year. A special meeting of the "v°w Plymouth Harbour Board was held on Monday, a.nd after a long discussion on policy, it was decided that specifications for the new Moturoa concrete wharf be prepared and .submitted to the board as early as possible, so- that tenderstinay be called. The design for the structure, which is eventually to s 'place the <4*l Mcturoa timber wharf, was _ prepared about, a year ago by the resident engineer (Mr G. W. B. Lowsoiii. It was then estimated to cost £300,000. The length is to be 1300 feet on tbe eastern .side and 980 feet on the western side, with a width of 186 feet. It will provide three overseas berths'. A shed, to cost £40,000 and cranes and equipment to. cost £60,000 were provided for in the original scheme, but these items were not included in the terms of Monday’s resolution.
