NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.”)

Hipo ran a good race throughout the Storey Cup and eventually finished a good fifth. Oration was tried over a mile course in the Puketuha. Handicap at Te Rapa bust Saturday. He was one of the leading division throughout, and was a close fourth at the post. Melissa did mot begin quite as fast as usual in the President’s Handicap at the Waikato meeting. She also appeared to meet with slight interlerence, but finished very fast in fourth place. Raliepoto raced well enough last Saturday to suggest his winning over hurdles ere long. Blue Spear, who rau a very creditable second at Te Rapa last Saturday, is one of the Catmint breed, and will pay his nay later on. A'rfter running {prominently in a number of maiden races, the Aus-tralian-bred Bombardier got on the winning Jist at Te Rapa, but his performance was nothing to enthuse over. 'After running a number of excellent races in minor places, the Nassau filly Partial Eclipse won like a promising sort at the Waikato meeting.

Despite her double win at the last Te Aroha meeting, Gold Money was neglected by bettors at Te Rapa last Saturday. This is a nice filly. Inability to begin quickly was against White Wings last Saturday, but Limond’s daughter finished well and should be a payable proposition next season.

Bulolo, a two-year-old claiming Bisogne as sire, ran an excellent third last Saturday at the Waikato meeting. If lie makes age improvement Bulolo will be useful next season.

Whiie Valkon had raced consistently this season, luck was against him in most of his races. He looked very bright when saddled up last Saturday, and after being well placed all the way, finished too well for the opposition in the Storey Cup. Some of those who witnessed Ripon Abbey’s initial efforts over hurdles wrote the gelding down as being very promising. 'While admitting that he will improve with experience, it may be found that the gelding will never rise to great heights as a hurdler, although he will win when the company is not- select.

Up till the Waikato meeting Beau Cavalier had been a very moderate performer over the small sheep hurdles, but on Saturday last he gave easily his best display in that department of racing. Beau Cavalier looked remarkably bright and well, and gave his usual dashing display of fencing. He still lias a bad habit of swerving out at his jumps, a feature that will sooner or later cause a nasty smash. Up till now the Waikato Racing Club has had an uphill struggle to make their financial position such as would allow them to offer fair stake money and carry on Owners have been 'of muck help to the club and have nominated freely, but in the past the general public have not given the patronage the club deserved. . The meeting just closed was a great financial success, and will allow' the Waikato Racing Club to anticipate better times.

With the Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, and South Canterbury meetings over, the curtain has been rung down on the flat racing season of 1927-28. While many of the smaller clubs have had a precarious season financially, most have done well enough to suggest that in future matters in racing w’ill have an upward tendency. Hynanna’s victory in the Great Autumn Handicap under 9.6, his ex-j collent second to Mandane carrying. 9.9 at Awapuui, and hits victory under a welter-weight in the recently run J. D. Ormond Gold Cup, places Hynanna a good second to Star Stranger as the Dominion’s best handicap performer. With a R. Reed in the saddle this gelding’s performances must have been even better than • those registered.
