MEMORIAL WANTED.
TURUTITRU-MOKAI REDOUBT. APPLICATION FOR SUBSIDY. The reference made by Air. John Finlay in Monday’s “Hawera Star,” in the course of his article “Lest AVe P orget-,” to the lack of a memorial at the Turuturu-Mokai redoubt, and his conversation with Air J. G. Beamish, of Paten, the last survivor of the historic engagement of 60 years ago, was brought to the attention of the Hawera Council at its meeting on Tuesday evening by Cr. E. (Morrissey. As a. result the council decided to again apply to the Department of Internal Affairs for a subsidy on the £lO9 bequeathed towards the cost of a memorial by the late Air. C. C. Woods. “I know we' cannot expend the ratepayers’ money in the matter, but as tin? diamond jubilee of tlie engagement at Turuturu-Mokai will apparently be due in July, I think we should endeavour to do something,” said Cr. Morrissey, in calling attention to Air. Finlay’s article. 1 The town clerk (Air. H. E. Elliott) said the council might apply t-o the Government again for a subsidy on the sum donated by Air. AVoods. Last year, when the council applied for a subsidy, the Government had intimated that the application might receive consideration if renewed at the end of the financial year. Several voices: “It is election year.” The clerk said further that it had been suggested that Air. Beamish should be consulted concerning possible suggestions as to the ’form of the memorial.
The Mayor (Mr. E. A. Paeey) said that Mr. Beamish, had spoken to him about the memorial some time ago, but no definite promises could then be given. Now that the matter had been brought up, however, he considered the council should do anything it could towards ensuring that the legacy was properly expended. Cr, J. M. Townsend: “I think it was in the mind of Mr. Woods to have the names of those who fell in _ the engagement inscribed on a memorial.” On the motion of Cr. Morrissey, seconded by Cr. R. H. Leece. it was decided to'approach the Government and to aopoint a committee consisting of the Mavor and Crs. W. G. W aikley and J. M. Townsend to interview Mr. Beamish.
