RUGBY CONTROL.

TARANAKI REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. Tli© annual meeting of the Taranaki Referees’ Association was held at Stratford on Thursday evening, Mr. H. C. Johnson presiding over an attendance of about 30 members.

The annual report was adopted after a short discussion on the principal features of the season. Comment was made on the increased efficiency of many of the referees, and the great value to the game that had come from the visit during the year of Mr. Fletcher, of Wellington.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. A. H. Guy (Hawera); vice-president, Mr. J. Scrimgeour (New Plymouth); secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. R. Tyrer (Stratford); auditor, Mr. L. J. Furrie (Stratford) 5 delegate to the management committee of the Rugby Union, Mr. R. R. Tyrer; delegate to the New Zealand annual conference to be held at Nelson on April 6, Mr. R. R. Tyrer. The secretary was voted an honorarium of £5 ss.

The matter of senior appointments was discussed at length, on a motion moved by Mr. Eggleton to change the appointments board from a body of three to two boards of three each, representing North and South, for all matches within the respective divisions. Mr. Eggleton considered that the proposed boards would have better control and knowledge of the local conditions.

Mr. Furrie questioned the need for the change, and said that unless senior referees got junior matches at times, as was done in the cities, he did not see how they were to get more matches under the new scheme. Mr. F. At Id ns considered the alteration would tend to better management. The voting resulted m 17 for and 10 against the motion, and on the chairman’s ruling that it would need a four-fifths majority to carry the motion it was declared lost. It was resolved also to suggest to the Rugby Union that a better system of making appointments for representative matches should be introduced. The matter will be brought before the New Zealand Referees’ Association. It was decided to hold a conference of referees in April.
