MANAIA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
BOY SCOUTS.
A sot ial evening was held at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday evening, when Commissioner Horner, from Havvera, inspected the troop and presented the badges. A short committee meeting was held before the social to make arrangements for the Easter camp. At’ £> o’clock the commissioner arri ,ed and inspected the troop and presented badges as follow: Tenderfoot, G. Innes, D. Wells. H. Payne; secondclass, L. Budd, J. Mercer, J. Me-. ; racken; first class, W. Dakers, F. Gamlin, G. Hammonds; proficiency coon s’ badge, F. Dick, R. Hammonds, J. Kitt; service stars, W. Dakers, Forrester (2), Christie (2), J. McCracken, and J, Hill. An exhibition in semaphore signalling, fireman’s lift and artificial respiration concluded the programme. Mr. Hammonds, of Manaia, is in receipt of a very appreciative letter from Scoutmaster Clark, of Patea, acknow'edging some photographs of recent scout work at Manaia. He adds that Scout work in Patea is progressing steadily, and that they have a singsong evening every fourth Monday, aach boy contributing an item. He remarks that daylight saving and holia,s clashed with their work and causd a falling-off in attendances, but this has now improved. The scouts have assisted many charity efforts and helped at the recent beach sports. They also sent out search parties for a boy who was lost, and, after finding his body, acted as bearers at his ’uiierai. * They are going to plant the sand at the sides of the hew beach, road with seeds they have collected, to stay the drift. They thus do “heaps of good tiff-ns and always try to play the game.”
