SAFETY CAMPAIGN
EXTENSION TO SCHOOLS
It is probable that the Australian example of forming junior safety councils in schools will be followed in -\ew Zealand when the proposed safety campaign is . set going. Australia has a national safety council, and under its sponsorship an noth e junior council is being set up. Mr. H. J. hook, the secretary, is visiting the schools, addressing the children on the aims and principles of the movement,- and asking them to select office-bearers. The executive will have sole control of the safety council affairs in each school.
A supply of distinctive badges was distributed for members of the junior safety patrol, active members of the movement, and associate members. The badge will be strapped on to the arm, and it will be the duty of wearers to escort children safely across the highways. All motorists are asked- to recognise and respect these badges and render assistance to the wearers.
Mr. B. Falek, president of the Canterbury Automooile Association, stated recently that every effort was being made to get started with a national safety campaign in New Zealand. The motoring organisations had given much time and thought to the question. The Christchurch City Council had been approached, and the question would be raised at the municipal conference. When the campaign is launched, no doubt a national safety council will emerge from the movement, and the junior salety council idea will be applied to the schools. It is realised that one of ,the most important fields of service is in the schools.
