The track was in perfect order and with medium sized fields of good standard provided the essential factors to exciting sport. A handy field of seven good perform ers contested the Cup race, in which Messrs Arnold Bros-’ candidate, Manly, trained by W. E. Mantle, of New Plymouth, created somewhat of a surprise by leading the favourite, Orazone, home by a length, with the next fancy, Hipo, close up- Orazone, which made a good bid from the three-furlong peg, where she, was in the rear of _the field, is trained by J. Brown, of xiawera, and races under Mr A. Alexander’s colours. The event of next importance, the St. Patrick’s Handicap, drew nine runners, first honours going to Mr C. J. Preston’s Bouzova, of C. Jackson’s stable, with the favourite, Silvermane, beaten into fifth place. The totaliisntor was freely patronised, the sum of £20.138 going through the machine, a-s compared l with' £19.778 at- the 1927 gathering, an increase of £360. ■ „ . . All arrangements were controlled bv the officials. who combined with the president. Mr A. Good, and the secretary, Mr P. S. Riley, in the conduct of the* meeting. As: tft-arter, Mr A.
