The opinion has been expressed that, the next general election may be fought, on the protection issue. In this connection the Minister of Labour, Sir A. Steel-Maitland, speaking at King’s Lynn, said: “We have put Imperial preference on a stable, and endurable basis, and there is a case for revising now what may have been a perfectly sound fiscal policy under the different conditions of eighty years ago.”
