SERVICE

A NEW ORGANISATION. LOOKING AFTER THE ASSOCIATION MEMBER. Motorists generally throughout New Zealand 1 will welcome the advent of a new motor service organisation which is at present in the process of formation. The new association is to be known as the “Automobile Association Service Organisation of New Zealand.” Judging by particulars supplied at the meeting of the South Taranaki Automobile Association last week, the project will be hailed with delight by the motoring public throughout the Dominion. The organisation, as far as the North Island is concerned, is to be divided into. two districts, with headquarters at Hamilton and -Palmerston North. A competent staff of men is to be employed under the supervision of an experienced service officer in both towns. The functions of the association will be of the greatest assistance to motorists from overseas and tourists generally. The work proposed to be carried out consists of sign posting, road reports, guide books, and road service. All sign posting will be carried out in one definite system, and each district will be covered at least twice a year, when a. report showing signs required and the cost of erection will lie supplied. Special road reports will be supplied to all associations at 1 Christmas and Easter and at any time warranted by the circumstances. An official guide will lie published annually, purchased by association, and issued free; or at a low price to members only.

A proper’ system of road and route numbers will be worked out by the service- organisation on the same lines as ackqitecl by the Ministry of Transport in England. Tin's, when submitted. would undoubtedly be adopted by the Highways Board. With regard to road .service, this would be developed as the organisation grew on the same lines as in England and America. Patrols would give assistance on the road, and officers would be on duty at all race meetings, shows, etc., and special arrangements made re parking members’ cars. There are many other uses to which the organisation could he put, such as the organisation and improvement of camping sites, _ the organisation of the hotel concessions to a standard basis throughout the North Island. If funds permit, it is intended to do a certain amount of regular advertising to keep the work of the. organisation before the public.
