THE SMILE CASTLE MAIL-BAG

Kaupokonui, March II

Dear Smile Queen, —I have such a lot of news. Lately I have been going for guide badges, and I now have six without my service star. The names of ■these are the Tenderfoot, Second Class, Entertainers’, Thrift, Cooking, and Laundry-wo man’s. Our lieutenant left us a few weeks ago and our, captain has gone, too. We gave them each a farewell tea and a little gift. One we parted with at. a home and the other at Marinin Park. At each we had a happy time playing games and singing choruses. I had a very interesting holiday in different places. I went to the Guido crimp at Greenmeadows, and altogether had a lovely time. Each day we had different duties, a rest hour, canteen, two swims, dancing, sometimes a camp fire, and lastly a cup of cocoa. Two of the days we spent mostly in sport, swimming and racing. The few weeks I was home I went down to the Kaupokonui beach, which is only a mile from our home, practically every day. Some of the time I stayed in Hawera and spent my time at the baths. Yesterday I wo nit to a friend’s birthday party and instead of having an ordinary one wo all went down to the beach and had a swim and tea on the flat. I am going to Manaia District High School now. We are so glad it has started to rain a. little, but we still want more. My Mangolds are coming on lovely, and everything is much fresher on the farm. It seems so strange now “Sidey’s time” is over. If we go for a swim we have to come home so early. Well, I must.say good-bye now.—l am, your loving Smile, Doris Dakers.,

[What a glorious time you have had, Doris. Congratulations on earning so many badges. Do write and tell me more about your guiding. Have you another captain? You were lucky to do so much swimmTng. Do you like the High School? I feel I want to ask loads of questions, so do "write me all your nows soon again please. Love from S.Q.]

Meet people' played games, and at half-past two the hand played. The children had a ollie scramble and fruit was given around to everyone. Some people walked round the gardens, but many seemed to prefer the shade of the trees. Our Castle corner does not seem to be as large -ais it'used to be.
