One of the institutions of which \\ aiignnui is very proud, the Sargeant Art Gallery, which stands on a rise formerly occupied by the- stockade in the time of the Native troubles, has taken on a new interest in the last few days. Following the reports of activity e-t Ngaruhoe last week some local residents asserted that while walking near the gallery they heard rumblings. Little notice was taken of the report, but it has been ascertained that old Maori records tell of an active volcano where Wanganui is now built located at approximately the point where the gallery is situated. One native stated on Saturday that he remembered his father speaking of the volcano' and that in comparatively recent times, as far as Maoris are concerned, there was a tepid lake in the vicinity. Colour is lent to this statement by the fact that during the somewhat disastrous earthquakes that took place in the early days of the European settlement sulphurous fumes issued from under the nearby cliffs. Eighty years ago chloroform was used at an operation for the first time. 1 Its use as an anaesthetic was due to | Sir James Young Simpson, the son of ! a Linlithgow (Scotland) baker, who lived to become one of the most eminent physicians of his period j PREVENTING HOLIDAY COLDS. The holiday season brings with it a crop of colds. Wo wear thinner clothing than we’re used to, get overheated at tennis and other sports, and generally take risks with our health. And a neglected chill may be dangerous. But Pulmona pastilles are helpful. Taken at the first sneeze they nip colds and chills in the bud. Enjoy all fun of summer days, but keep fit with Pulmonas.
