RE-OPENING THE WORKS.
CABINET MAKES OFFER. CONDITIONAL ON SETTLEMENT. BY CABI.E-PKESS ASSOCIATION—COPY HIGH • ’ SYDNEY. March 15/. A deputation of Labour members of Parliament asked the Premier (the Hon. T. It. Bavin) to reconsider the decision to close the YY alsli Island shipyard and convene a conference of both parties to the dispute over the bonus system. The deputation emphasisel the serious elleet the closing of the worlds would have both on Newcastle and the surrounding district. Later the Cabinet considered the request and decided that the works would re-open on Monday only if the men agree to return to work under the bonus system. The Government will then bewilling to hear any requests or proposal the men may make, but unless the men first return the works will be closed on Friday. RECOMMENDATIONS OF CONFERENCE. LIKELY TO HAVE GOOD RESULT. Received 10.40 a.m. to-day. SYDNEY, March 16. At the compulsory conference of parties to the Walsh Island dispute, convened by the Commonwealth Conciliation Commissioner, proposals were made which it is believed will result in the reopening of the works. The recommendation have been telegraphed' to the Federal executive of the Boilermakers’ bunion for consideration.
