STEAMER IN DISTRESS.
SOUTH OF BLACKHEAD POINT REPORT FROM PORANGAHAU. rby TELEGRAPH “TRESS association.] WELLINGTON, March 12. The secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department received the following message from the Chief Postmaster at Napier: “Postmaster at Porangahau reports that a vessel, probably a steamer, is in distress fifteeen miles south of Blackhead Point, and from four to five miles off the coast. Residents of Porangahau have lit fires on the mainland and the managers of local shipping companies have been advised.” ANOTHER ACCOUNT. WAIiPUKURAU, March 12. The “Waipukurau Press’ communicated with 'Constable Moss, of Porangahau, who states that he saw a vessel at a standstill, or slowly drifting at four o’clock in the afternoon yesterday. It gave forth what appealed to be three .signal flashes about five times and then shortly before seven o’clock two blasts, turned round and proceeded quickly south again.
