When questioned by the sergeant she said the bottles had been left in the staff room for her earlier on the prvious afternoon. A-slced for her name, she had given one which proved subsequently to be that of -a girl employed at the hotel.

“I regret that the girl has not appeared ■ in person,” said Mr O’Dea. “She is an attractive looking girl and it would not have hurt her case had she faced the court, ” , continued counsel and the magistrate ’a smile was mirrored round the room. Accompanied by her*youug man the girl was/returning home from a party and ha.d called to take the beer home, she having been given to understand it would be left for her. .She had never previously been in trouble with the law and counsel asked that the court order the suppression of her name. The magistrate: Does the police agree as to the respectability of the girl’s character? ■Sergeant Henry: Oh, yes; iShc Is quite a respectable girl. Nothing is known against her previously. ‘The request for the suppression of the name was granted. On the charge of being unlawfully on the premises the girl was convicted and fined £1 and 10s costß.

Despite the suggestion by counsel that the girl’s action in giving a false name was the result of the shock when confronted by the police, it is impose sible to take a lenient view of the offence, said the magistrate. On, this count a fine of £2 10s and 10s costs was imposed.
