BOWLING

ENTHUSIASM OF PLAYERS. DISTRICT EVENTS. Tourneys have been, the order of the day all over the Dominion and this condition will rule for some time. There is no more social game played than bowls and it is remarkable how well the tourneys in every centre are patronised by rinks from other clubs. The enthusiasm displayed by bowlers is really an object lesson to other sports. The meeting of bowler 3 from various clubs leads to a “keeping-up” of the game and competitors need to be m good form and to have a steady-hand and eye. if they wish to win. Play at all toiirneys is of a high standard. The leading bowlers encourage and foster the' game very liberally, which is a great incentive to improvement of play. No one in South Taranaki has done more for the game than Mr George Syme, th e doyen of bowlers here. His institution of the competition for the Syme Shield has been extraordinarily popular and provides a great opportunity to the clubs of South Taranaki to try their skill one against the other. 'Besides being an incentive to better play, it is another avenue towards increasing the already strong feeling of camaraderie amongst bowlers. Another popular meeting is the annual tourney in Hew Plymouth. It draws large entries from all parts of Taranaki and from neighbouring provinces. , , , Lt will be of interest to bowlers to •read of the decision of the committee which conducts the Manawatu tourney to uphold a protest made by a competitor against another player for using unstamped bowls. The decision it is reported, brought nine more rinks into the semi-finals. It is, or should be, well known that the rule against unstamped bowls has been adopted by the Hew ■Zealand Council and is absolute all over ’the Dominion.
