TOPICAL COMMENT. (By "Maecenas.”) San. Fera ran a fair race at Stratford last Tuesday, and he should be able to exhibit his best form at the coming meetings of the Egmont and Taranaki Clubs. In his first attempt as a hurdler (at Woodvillo last month) Powhiri showed exceptional promise, so it was not a surprise to find him first favourite and winning each day at the recent Marlon meeting. Mint Leaf, Hipo and Melissa all looked uncommonly well at the recent Stratford meeting and all ran excellent races to fill second place. In their present form the trio named will get some prize money. After being off the scene for a long while, Poteen was raced at .the recent Taranaki and Stratford meetings. He appeared to break down badly at the latter meeting, so it may be a long lime, even if Poteen ever races again. After their good showings when they won at the Christmas meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club, Vivo and Manly wore expected to run prominently at Hie late meeting hold at Stratford, but the pair utterly failed to reproduce t.hcir New Plymouth form. Kiosk did not get on the winning list, at the Manawatu or Marton meetings, but this form is not his best, and Kiosk isi worth remembering for a race even like the difficult Thompson Handicap, to be run at the coming meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. Bisox was raced on each day of the Stratford and Taranaki meetings, but failed to produce her best form. She appeared to move short in her preliminaries, so possibly Bisox felt the effects of the hardness of the summer tracks.

After running a close third to Seastar and Quillfire in the six furlong hack event on the first day at Stratford, many looked on Royal Acre as unbeatable in the 7A furlongs of the Toko High-Weight run the second day. Royal Acre was well placed over the early stages of the race, and his rider called on: him a furlong from home, but Royal Acre could do little bettor and finished third. At the present time Royal Acre is best suited over a short course.

At the summer meeting of the Australian Jockey Club, held on December 24 and' 26, the ex-Hawera rider M. McCarten rode Vitality to victory in the Holiday Handicap of £SOO on the opening day, and also Scored on thesame horse in the iimportant Summer Cup of £2500, decided on the second day of the meeting. About the same time another ex-New Zealander in A. Reed was successful on Sans Culotte at the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s gathering, while on December 26 still another ex-Dominionite in H. Cairns scored on Savadan at the Moonee Valley meeting. At the present time our Dominion is badly off for experienced jockeys, and very few apprentices are displaying form that suggests 1 their developing into first-class riders. The paucity of riders in New Zealand is made more apparent when one reads of the successes in-Australia of such good horsemen as H. Cairns, M. McCarten and A. Heed, all three of whom served their apprenticeship and afterwards rode as first-class riders in this Dominion. One wonders if our standard •of riding will fall any lower. The Stratford Racing Club’s course, with its long straight and uphill grade, is- possibly the most deceptive and difficult from a judgment- point of view of any of our New Zealand courses, and in 90 per cent of races decided on this track riders extinguish the chance of their mount by making their run- on the straight entrance. An exception at the recent meeting was N. F. Johnson, who landed The Swell a winner each day. Johnson used excellent judgment, hut for which The , Swell would not have won either day. Since the last race meeting held on tbe Egmont racecourse the old judge’s Imix has been removed, and in future that official will be placed in a new box level with and just off the stewards’ stand. Tn days gone by the judges’ boxes placed parallel with the outside rail of the course may have served their purpose reasonably satisfactorily, hut in these days of very big field and extremely close finishes if is essential that, the judge Tie placed in the best position, and that is at a point many feet hack from the- horses. The Mar toil Jockey Club faced a bigproblem- when they decided to reconstruct their old racecourse, and it was made more difficult, by reason of world-wide financial depression. The recent meeting of the club showed a big decrease in the totalizator figures as compared wtih last- year, a feature that will cause the finance committee of the club manv anxious moments. Still, with the undoubted advantage of a general holiday for their meeting, the Marlon Club should “make good.”

HAWERA TRACK NOTES. (By “Limited.”) No galloping of importance took olar-o on the TTawera. track this morn ing, trainers restricting their horses to ea-sv exercise and pace- work. Lady Desmond. Reremoa.na, and Bright. Glow were the only horses to do more than 'half-pace- work. J. Brown returned from Auckland yesterday with StiveTinine,, who dpes not

lonic any the worse lor his trip. Silvermine' is engaged in the' Wellington Stakes, taml will make the trip in company. with Llnnore.

'Mr. A. Alexander's Pershotre filiv, Llanore, has shown, brilliancy on the tracks, and, was nnfortunate in being hopelessly left in her twq> efforts at Stratford. Otherwise she would have been in the money. Hiariyanda, after her good showing at Awapnni, was confidently expected to prevail at Stratford, but again disappointed. Her full brother, Marianna, meanwhile made history at. Ancle land. Eartuga. developed soreness on the first day at Stratford, and will be rested up' a bit. Renzora ran disappointingly, and bis trainer is quite unable to account for Ids poor showing, as the horse was working well and appeared in good heart.

Bright Glow, the Stratford Cup winner, has been nominated for the Wellington Cup, and all going well will contest that event. Airtight will probably accompany the mare and compete in the high-weight events at the meeting. At Stratford Airtight gave a good showing in his initial display over the hurdles, and can confidently be expected to win at this branch of the game. . Lady Desmond’s next outing will be in the Wellin'gton Cup, and with Bright Glow will constitute Hawera’s hopes for the big handicap. Reremoana will be a competitor in the shorter distance,s.

EL,a has had the hard luck to run four seconds in. as many starts, and will be given a spell for a week or so- in the paddock. At the Stratford meeting two of the imported Callaghan’s progeny performed promisingly. Messrs Startup’s Ga.llaiiiine, the, half-sister to Denier, showed up well in her first run when she finished third to' Gold Dawn, andi Upoko in tiie Juvenile Handicap oil the first day. Mr. F. Bluett’s fine colt Ca,Hapat put up a> good run when he was fourth in the Juvenile on the second day. / The Christmas meetings in Taranaki invariably giro opportunities for our apprentice jockeys, and at the meetings just concluded several boys showed abilities which augur well for their future success.

T. Todd Iliad the .gratification of riding a, winner in his first race. He was afterwards- remarked upon as having ridden a particularly good race on Glengariff. H.H’itcon, J. Fryer’s apprentice, won the 'Stratford Cup on Bright Glow, riding like an old hand, and is a, plucky rider, having the* essentials of a successful jockey. H. Mills, in 0. Cox’s stable, also rode a winner and was three times second. his riding leaving very little to cavil at.

Silent, Green Acre, and Kawhakina are the only H awe rad rained horses nominated for Fox ton meeting.
