■ DROWNED IN THE SURF. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 5Just after noon to-day bystanders at die junction of Onepu Road and Lyali Parade heard cries which were the prelude to a tragedy in which Stella Josephine Knight, 14 yeans of age, lost her life. She had been bathing in the Lyali Bay surf in company with her brouter Lenuie. aged 10, and had been in the, - water for a short time whjen both thechildren were seen to be in difficulties. The beach caretaker, Mr McDonald, Mr D. G. McNabb, of Timaru, and Mr Marchant, of the Lyallßay Surf C.ub, ,vith other members of the club, rushed to the rescue and brought the boy to shore. Once on the beach, he was soon none the worse for his experience. Mr McDonald and Mr McNabb carried Stella Knight from the sea., and it was seen that the unfortunate girl was at least unconscious. At once means of restoring respiration .-wore unployed, but without result. Dr. W. Shirer, who wa© communicated with, f at once, hastened to the spot, but on. his arrival declared life, was ext r.ct.

Two young children of V. Lee, a prominent 'Gjreymouth jockey, -were knocked down by a motor lorry yesterday at Reef ton racecourse. The boy was cut on the face and-the girl-was removed to the hospital where her com dition this morning was reported to be very low.
