The Hawera postmaster (Mr. L. J. Bull) left on two weeks’ leave of absence to-day. Mr. J. W. Velvirn will officiate as acting-postmaster during Mr. Bull’s absence.

Messrs. J. Winks, S. Maslin, S. Adamson and L. J. Bull, members; of the Hawera Bowling Club, are taking part in the Dominion bowling tournament, to be held at Christchurch next week. They left Hawera this morning.

Guests at the Commercial Hotel last night included Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Lode and Mrs. Jackson, of Wellington, proceeding to New Plymouth, and Mn and Mrs. W. Atkins, of Mot-ueka, motoring bo Wellington.

Major-General the Hon. Alexander ITore-Ruthvem has been appointed Governor of South Australia, says a Press Association message received from London to-day. < Mr P. V. Lysaght, a well-known exresident of this district and mow living in the Tiniaru district, is visiting his relatives at Mokoia. Mr Lysaght will spend a few days here before proceeding to Tauranga to visit his brother, Mr H. Lysaght.

The Rev. R. E.. Evans, who suffered injury as a result of accidentally running a spiked tent peg into hus foot when camped at Awakino, is progressing favourably. Mr Evans, wifi* Mrs Evans and family, was on a motor tour to Auckland when the miehap occurred, and he was forced to return to Hawera. He expects to leave for Auckland in about ’a weekV time. Word has been received in Wellington of the death of the Rev. T. H. Darlon, M.A. Por 25 years Mr Darlon was the literary superintendent of the Brit, ‘ish and Forcing Bible Society, and edited their magazines, the “Bible in the World” and “'Gleamings. ” As a writer his books have been well known over the whole Christian world. Word has been recieved from London that Mr. €. Bishop Martin, of New Plymouth (and formerly of Elthani and Inglewood) has been successful in passing the Fellowship examination of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. Mr. Martin is now at the London Refraction Hospital.

Many friends in South Taranaki wad have .read .with regret of the death, in Dunedin of Mr A- O'. Buclder, headmaster of the Kaikorai School. Mr. Bu oilier was for .several years in this district, where lie was in charge at Okaiawa and later left foir Palmerston North before going to the South Island. A keen enthusiast in Rugby, he was hon .secretary of the Okaiawa Football Club- for a couple of years andi did excellent work in that capacity. He was a comparatively young man, being only about 50 years of age at his death, and he leaves a widow and four ohi'dren.

On. Wednesday evening the Gover-nor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson propose to leave Wellington for Dunedin and Invercargill. They will make an official tour of several districts in Southland. On or about January 20 they will go into residence at “Elmwood,’’ Papanui Road, Christchurch, for three weeks or a month, and early ini March they propose to pay their customary annual visit to Auckland, where they will take up residence at Government House.
