CANNERS’ WAR.
GN FOREIGN DUMPING. EMPIRE CAMPAIGN. LOiNI)'GIN, Dec. 21. An Empire move to secure the whole of canneu. goods trade in Britain, and a determined effort to rout roreign dumpers, were forecasted in speeches at the Food Canning Council's lunch, today. toil- Granville Ry-rie appealed to the Empire canners to 00-operate in capturing the British market. The.y could thus, he said, supply' the whole of Britain’s requirements, 80* per cent, of which were at present drawn rrom foreigners. The essentials -were continuity of suplies, uniform quality and attractive labelling. Australia had in recent years greatly improved her grading, and had secured a definite place in the British market.
Sir Edgar Jones, chairman of the council, said that vast quantities of the foreign imports represented surpluses, dumped, regardless of the cost of production. British canners intended to attack foreign importations. He li-oped that there would he a joint-, attack with the Dominions co-operating, and suggested the appointment of an expert medical committee in order to dispel the lingering British prejudice against canned foods.
