NEW PLYMOUTH TOUBNEY.

MUCH EXCELLENT PLAY.

Wednesday was a very busy day on the tennis courts at New Plymouth, for it was the first day of the anual tourney and included in the competitors were several of the leading players of the Dominion. As was expected, play in many cases was of a high order. The total entires were 150, and this meant a very busy time for the hon. secretary (Mr A. Bichards) and executive, all of whom did capital work and had the organisation so well arranged that everything went smoothly and expeditiously all day. The courts were in good order. Of the many good contests, one of the best was that in which Miss Mathieson and A. Stedman beat Miss Brewster and A. G. Wallace after a strenuous contest. Each won a set 7—5, and in the third the former looked easy winners with 4—o in their favour, but their opponents evened at 4- all and they lost by only 6—4. Another mixed doubles which drew close attention was that in which Miss McKay (Whangarci) and Bichards (New Plymouth) beat Miss Simpson and J. B. Parker (Wellington). The latter wort, the first set easily, but after a great struggle, their opponents, after being behind, 5 —3, went on to win 9—7, and securing a similar result in the third, they won 6 —4 and got the match. * The results look likely to be extremely interesting, because in the singles Bartleet, Parker, Sellar, J. Stedman, Lampe and C. Webster are in the top half, while in the lower half are E. W. Griffiths, A. Stedman, N. Wilson, Wallace and Dickie. In the doubles are Griffiths and Bartleet, Stedman (2), Wilson and Ellis in the top, and Wallace and Dickie, Lampe and Parker, and Powell and Melody in the lower half.

The boys’ and girls’ classes will bo very keenly contested. A. Dickie beat Drew (New Plymouth), and Miss M. Cave, the girls’ champion at Hawera, won her first match easily.
