ADVERSELY CRITICISED. AFFAIRS IN NICARAGUA. VIOLATION OF CONSTITUTION. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT WASHINGTON, Jan. 3. With Mr. Wilbur’s announcement that 1030 marines had been ordered to Nicaragua, and a statement by the State Department that both the major parties in Nicaragua endorse the United States’ effort to defeat the rebels, the American policy in Nicaragua continues to be subjected to criticism. Groups of prominent citizens in Nicaragua are preparing a petition, to be presented to Colonel Lindberg, asking .for the withdrawal of American troops. Various Senators and Representatives in the United States Congress have issued statements condemning the American position. Senator Wheeler said he proposes to introduce a motion ■ •ailing for investigation of, American policy in respect of Nicaragua. He said: “If I understand the situation correctly we are now party to a further violation of the constitution of Nicaragua.” The Representative for Huddlestone said: “Technically the President may have the power to send troops to Nicaragua, but it certainly is a violation of the American constitution and a dangerous situation has been created. We should not have been pmced in such a situation.- and I do not know how we are going to clear ourselves.
