Sir Frederick Lingard’s elevation to the peerage is regained by the Press as the crown to a great career as an Empire builder and administrator in tropical Africa, which began in 1888, when he commanded a volunteer force in Nyassaland against the Arab slave traders. Later he organised the administration of Uganda, and subsequently as High l Commissioner in West Africa effectively occupied and settled Northern Nigeria with a minimum- of fighting. He became Governor-General of the Nigerias, which he amalgamated in 1912, and, following a short period as Governor of ' Hongkong, he retired seven vears later.
His unrivalled knowledge of African native questions highly qualified him for the position as the British member of the League of Nations’ Permanent Mandates Commission, which -he hag held since 1922.
