BUSH FIRES IN VICTORIA
STRENUOUS FIGHT WITH
FLAMES
BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION --COPYRIGHT Received 11.35 a.m. to-day. MECLIBOUJRiNE, Jan. 4. Reports. from Wangaratta, Beachworth and Wodonga state that the bush fires are now practically under control. ' The total damages is estimated at £1.50,000. The most extensive fires were in the Everton and Hansonvillo districts, where fanners and volunteers from the town fought the flames for two, days. This fire reached within four miles of Dlyrtleford, which was saved by a change of wind. Another fire at Eldorado extended over an area of about ten by fifteen miles, one station losing five stacks of hay and a thousand bags of grain. Hundreds of sheep are missing, but it is hoped that many are safe as stock was driven a,way in the Beaohworth district Several houses were burnt. The Murungee post office was saved after strenuous efforts.
