STRATFORD RACES

FIRST DAY’S EVENTS. GOLD CTUP TO BRIGHT GLOW. TOWN BIRD WINS O'PEN SIX. One of the largest crowds which has ever assembled on Stratford’s popular racecourse was in attendance for the opening of the club’s annual two-day fixture yesterday. Special trains from both north and south brought large numbers of patrons, while the passenger complement of service and private carte materially .swelled the total, admittance fees hieing collected in respect of no less than 852 private vehicles. As -compared l with the 1927 meeting, the increased patronage was nsfleeted in a substantial addition to the totalisator turnover, £33,694 being handled as against £30,183 10s on the first day of 1927—an increase of £3510 10s.

Beautiful summer weather, good quality fields and a track in faultless condition supplied the essential factors to good racing, and the programme sustained interest throughout. Recent form proved a fairly reliable guide to the betting public, and though only two favourites came home, while three others obtained places, the dividend payers in the remaining instances were well supported and no pronounced surprise victories w* r e achieved. The big prize of the day, the Cup event, wag contested by a classy field of twelve, the well-performed Piuthair and Yoma being best supported, but it was left to the third choice, Mr J. Fryer’s (Hawera) charge, Bright Glow, flvinicr the colours of Mr H. Clelancl, to annex this trophy, with Mr E l . George’s (New Plymouth) Mint Leaf occupying second berth. At the conclusion of the race the trophy was presented to the winning owner by Mrs S. Pitt, the wife of the club president, after suitable congratulations on behalf of the club had been voiced hv the president, who remarked that the occasion was the second on which the gold cup "had been competed lor at Stratford. Honours in the event of next importance. the open six. were carried hv Mr F. I. Hunt’s (Te Aroha) Town Bird in a thrilling finish with the lo-cally-trained Tip Tree, who, in a sensational challenge, lost the decision by a nose only. The various officials combined wit" the secretary (Mr W. Power) with their customary efficiency in giving attention to the administrative details. The pornitar custodian of the Hawera course, Mr A. Morse, despatched 'the fields with the minimum of delay, Mr H H. .also of Hawera, gave the decisions from the judge‘is box. and the handicapping- duties had previously received the expert attention of Mr W. P. Russell. The totalasator staff was controlled by Mr "W. O’Callaghan, of Hawera.
