VIOLENCE IN SHANGHAI. ROBBERS AND POLICE FIGHT. B 1 CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received 1.35 p.m. to-day. SHANGHAI, Dec. 30. The holidays were marred by a renewed crime wave, with foreign and Chinese victims. A pitched battle occurred outside the settlement between a band of 80 armed robbers and tA*c Chinese volunteer police. There were 30 casualties. Five gunmen and a British policeman were killed.
A British harbour ferry was captured by pirates in broad daylight. The five foreigners who were aboard were robbed, and a factory pay roll was looted. Two attempts to kidnap children were frustrated.
