A story of one of the mothers of the earlv (lays was related by an old settler who* attended the recent celebration cthe jubilee of the Ashburton County. Nc-ar the site of the function there stood in the very eariy days a store conducted by Mr. Donald Williamson, the first storekeeper in Ashburton, and nearby were the stock yards. ‘Duiing the great flood of. 1868, the _ water swept over the flat country beside the bridge and the store was inundated, threatening death to the inmates. Airs. Yvilliamson tied her children fra the stock vards at. the height of the ‘ flood to prevent thenbeing swept away, while she attended to other duties. * There they remained I till they were rescud by a Mr. Robert Miller, who was mounted on a horse.
