AUCKLAND v. TARANAKI. LOCAL MEN BATTING. The Auckland touring team, young players irom the city, opened its tour m Taranaki by a match at Hawera this morning. The teams were as below : Auckland. —O. C. Gee (captain), R. G. Bush, 1. W. Cooper, J. N. Fraser, D. Hetheringcon, J. Langridge, L. T. J. Monteith, L. B. Sehnauer, H. G. Vivian, G. L. Weir, D. Webb. Taranaki. —-Penny (captain), Barker, Clieevers, Bottriil, Eggieton, Fookes, H. Hughes, Saxton, A. Thomas, Hayes, uonnelly. T. Muir and A. L. Jennings were the umpires. Penny won the toss from Gee and elected to bat, Banter and Clieevers opening to the bowling of Weir, each getting a single oh the first over. J? raser was the other bowler at the south end, and runs came slowly, the bowling being good, but both batsmen playing confidently. With the score at four W eir, with a ball of fine length, completely beat Barker, and he retired. 41 —1. Bottriil came next, and opened with a nice snick through the slips for a single off Weir, and followed it with a pretty off drive from Fraser, and a chop to square point brought up 10. Cheevers off drove F'raser for one, and put- him again to leg for a single. Then Bottrill went out to one from F'raser, m which the bowler cleverly changed his pace, and was bowled. 13 —2—7. Eggieton took his place and opened with a single through the slips. Cheevers then hit out at F’raser, getting two twos by nice cricket. Then F'raser tricked him also by a change of pace, and he was caught in the slips. 18—3 —9. Penny came next, and opened his score with a. hard square cut for a couple, and 20 went up. One over later Eggieton stepped in front to one from Weir and retired l.b.w. 20—4—1. Fookes followed, and next ball did the same as his team mate. 20 —s—o. H. Hughes went in next, and played out the over. Bush took the ball from F’raser, and with his second ball completely beat- Penny, scattering his stumps. 20 —6 —2. A. Thomas filled the vacancy, and Hughes got a nice two to leg. Hughes got Bush away to leg for a single and drove Weir twice for a couple past mid-on, and byes brought up 30. He then had a life off Weir, Fraser badly missing him in the slips. Scoring slackened till a slow bowler, Cooper, went on in place of Bush, and Thomas slammed him to square leg for four, following it wdth a single to leg. Hughes hit a lofty one that fell clear, and a single was run. He late cut Weir for a single, and then Cooper clean bowled Thomas after lie had scored six 38—7 —6.

Donnelly filled the vacant place and put the slow howler nicely to square leg boundary, bringing on 40. He repeated the shot, but smart fielding slopped the boundary. Bad fielding allowed a single, and then Hughes placed one nicely to square leg. But two balls later Weir Scattered his stumps with a trimmer. 46 —B—l 3. Grace was next and got a pretty single to the on. He then was badly missed in the outfield, and Donnelly added a single off Cooper. By singles 50 appeared and then Donnelly .slammed Cooper pa-sh the square leg boundary. Grace then hit over a yorker from Weir and retired. 54—9 2. Saxton, last man, came in and Donnelly hit Cooper for a .single, a. high one that fell safe. Saxton slogged at one and was nearly out, caught over the howler’s head. Saxton got a nice two through the slips and 60 appeared. One run later Saxton stepped out to Cooper and was stumped, the innings closing for 61.

Resuming after luncheon, both batsmen played pretty cricket and .the score mounted steadily to- 20. The bowling was fairly accurate and by singles mainly at reached 30, when Fookes with a ball of perfect length clean bowled Gee. 31—1 —-14. Cooper was next and off Bottnifl’is next over he- drove -straight to the howler, who partly fielded the ball and the wicket was knocked down, luckily Mo-nteiith was in his crease. Then the newcomer swung round to one from Botitrill and hit him to square leg boundary. Monteiuh neatly pulled a- short one from Fookes for three and singles brought on 40. Penny took the ball from Bottriil and 00-opar pulled his first ball: to- the on boundary, and again hit him similarly hut good fielding saved the four. Cloo-per nicely late cut Pokes for three and a. two tq- Monteith brought on 50. He slammed a- full toss from Penny to long leg for four -and with a lovely leg glide- -got another four and 60 w-as signalled. A single and a four, a- pretty square cut, and the Taranaki total was passed for one wioke-t. A lovely I-aite cut to- Monteith and a leg drive, both off Penny, brought on 70 and then Thomas took the ball from Fookes. His first over both, batsmen .played confidently and 80 soon appeared. Egglefon replaced Penny and bowled a maiden over. In Thomas’ next over Monteith went out to hit Thomas and the ball just got the off bail. 80—-2 — 37. The outgoing batsman had played, a- pretty stylish injiiin-gs. Langridge, the Sussex professional', was next. Hie opened with a single, but neither batsman was taking risks, and scoring was quiet until the newcomer with a lovely carpet drive hit Eg-gl-eto-n for three.
