Arising out of the discussion of a paper on whitebait read beforcj the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury by Mr. D. Hope, curator of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, the following motion was forwarded to the Marine Department and circulated to kindred societies: '‘That the council of this institute desires to draw the attention of the Government to the desirability of some form of control of the whitebait fishery, in view of the immense reduction in the numbers of the fish.” While not feeling competent to suggest what the form of control .should be, the institute felt that the matter should be thoroughly investigated by an expert, who might then advise on the situation.
