'Phe official celebration of the jubilee of Ashburton county took place yesterday, though the actual date fell on January 4 last. The ceremony took the form of driving pegs to mark the site’ of a bridge the -council proposes to erect to replace the present struetuie over the Ashburton Hirer on the main south road. This is practically on the spot where the first settler. Air. William Turton. established himself as ferryman and accommodation house keeper, and where his son, J. G. Tnrton, the firsv European horn in the county, was horn. Air. J. G. Turton. now a resident of Peel Forest, assisted by Mr. N. T. Life, senior member of the council and chairman of the works committee, in driving a peg. Among the sneakers wore the Hon. W. NosworMiv, Air. G. .Tolies, and Air. T. D. Burnett. AI.P.
