KAPONGA CHRISTMAS FAIR.

IN AID OF CONVENT FUNDS The Kuipoiuga Town Halil was a veritLibie liLve of industry and activity yesterday afternoon and evening on the occasion of the. Christmas fancy fail- in aid of the Convent School funds. Stalls of various descriptions and competition ticket-sellers did good business and the venture was a financial success. Stalls were controlled as follows :

Calces and confectionery.—Alesdames D. F. Alalone, A. El. Bates, J. O’Donogliue, A fusses E. King and Alary Alalone.

Produce and preserves. —Alesdames J. Bolger, D. Fitzgerald, AHsses H. Powell and W. Dawson.

Sewing —Airs Keegan and Miss A Alelville.

Refreshment room. —Me.s dairies M. O’Connor, James Kissick, Misses M. Hammersley, J*. Murpliy, M. Daley, N. and F. Brown. Christmas tree.—Mesdames Horace Mellow and IT. Stunners. Chocolate stand.—Messrs J. Miclialiek and D. Nees, of ELtham.

TENNIS TO URINAMENT. During the afternoon the tennis courts at the rear of the Town Halt, kindly placed at the service of the promoters by the ivaponga Tennis Onub, were occupied by members Q-f tlie Riverlea, Te Nguxu and Ivaponga Clubs, who engaged in a doubles tournament, resulting as follows : First round. —D. Fitzgerald and Mrs! Fitzgerald defeated M. Malone and Miss M. U 1 ’Neill; T. Hammersley and Mrs Shaw defeated D. P. Malone anti Miss Ritter; James Hammersley and Miss F. Hutchinson defeated B. Hammersley and Miss J. Severne; J- Bolger and ALi*s J3ol<2;er clei'eiat-ed JL > . Caaneron arid Mrs W. H. L. Roberts; J. Gibson and Mrs M. Priest defeated J. Brook (Hamilton) and Mass W. Hutchinson; R. McCarthy and Mrs Freeman defeated Joe Hammersley and Mrs Uammorsley. Second round—R. McCarthy and Mrs Freeman defeated James Hammersley and Miss F. Hutchinson; D. P. Malone and Miss Ritter defeated Mr and Mrs Bolger; J. Gibson and Mrs Priest defeated Mr and Mrs Fitzgerald. Semi-final. —McCarthy and Mrs, Freeman defeated Gibson and Mrs Priest; Malone and Miss Ritter, a bye.

Final.—AlcCarthy and ALrs Freeman (35) defeated Alalone and .Miss Hitter (29). THE EVENING SESSION. in the evening the hall was packed, many visitors from Alanaia, O'kaiaiwa, jjltham and surrounding districts attending. Included in tlie visitors was a, concert party from Eltham who added much to the entertainment with the items contributed at St. Joseph’s fair at Eltham earlier in the week. A series of bright numbers were also presented by the Kaponga Convent pupils and Aliss Alurdoch (Okaiawa). The programme concluded with a novel turn, m the form iff a lazy stick pull, which created ia great deal of interest. Tlie concert programme was as follows :

Overture, Convent pupils; song, “Dolls for Sale,” Convent pupils; eight hand Irish reel, Eltham. Convent pupils (Alolly and Sarah Alullallv, Norah White, Mavis Carey, Pruva Evaaioff, Kathleen Fake, Rose and Olive Alarchant) ; pianoforte duet, Alisses Bolger; songs, “The Okl Fashioned Town” and “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” Aliss Alurdoch; prison scene and song, Eltham. Convent pupils (Mavis Carey, Jack Sheehey., Pat Shepherd, Don Elmmett, Bob- Bourke, Pat Stevens, Ted O’Hagen) ; song “Grandmothers,” Com vent senior girls; Alaypole dance, Convent girls. Aocompanistes, Alisses Norah Sheehey (Eltham) and Hick land (Riverlea). On behalf of the Catholic community Air D. Fitzgerald heartily thanked tltose present for their attendance and assistance and called for three cheers for the pupils and their tutors who had provided a first-class entertainment.

Second round.—Malone beat Joyce; Sohniber beat Charters; Comerford beat Hammersley (Charters palled in place Oif McCnacken, who retired). Semi-final.—Malone beat Sdhniber; Oomerfon'd, a bye. Final.—Malone beat Comerford.

Messrs D. Fitzgerald, James Kissick, Joe Hammersley, M. Comerford and T. Hammersley rendered valued assistance in various capacities throughout the fair, and to these gentlemen the secretary and committee are grateful.
