EGG-LAYING CONTEST.

HAWERA DISTRICT SCHEME. APPROVED BY EXPERTS. “There is no doubt that competitions such as that- which Hawera breeders are instituting in this centre,” said Mr. Brown, the chief poultry expert of the Department of Agriculture to a “Hawera Star” representative, “do a great deal of gpocl to the industry, and those in existence have been a great factor in improving the type of bird used by poultry growers.” The aim, -said Air. Brown, of the department is to encourage a type of bird fit for breeding, and not merely one that will perhaps- lay well and Hot transmit its charactertics to its progeny. He added that sometimes a “freak” bird was discovered, which was a wonderful layer and of no use as a breeding bird. . In order that the contest -should 1 be of the utmost value the. departmental officers inspected the- birds- and also the eggs periodically, and gave the promoters of the contests every possible assistance. They were as anxious as the breeders that success should be achieved and the right type of bird secured. Mr. Blown added that he was very glad to see the -spirit of enterprise .in Hawera district, where, there were many earnest enthusiasts in poultry, and that he was out to help them in every way he could. He wished the scheme the greatest postsible good fortune, and hoped to see before long the good results -accruing that he knew the promoters desired. Mr. Brown and Air. Cocker went out this afternoon, and with the executive discussed thoroughly the matter of buildings at Normanby and all the details necessary before- launching the scheme. The executive expects to commence building immediately, and lias promises of hearty -support.-
