HAWERA SCHOOL.

MARCHING COMPETITIONS As. a variation tp the usual drill instruction, marching competitions were held at the Hawera School today, when ten squads of pupils took part. Arrangements had been made lor Messrs F. A. Bates (headmaster) and A. W. Lawn to judge the marching, but just at the commencement, Mr Wentworth, .supervisor of physical instruction in New Zealand schools arrived and poinsented to judge. Handicaps' were allowed ranging from la points lor tlie youngest squads. Marks totalling CO were allowed for stepping off, dressing in file, dressing in Jours, spacing, in lours, step and. carriage. The competition was won by the senior boys, who. gained 57 marks. The senior girls were second with 49 and then followed by Standard 111. and IV girls (A squad) -IS, Standard Hi and IV girls (B squad) 47, Standard lif and IV boys 47.

Mr Wentworth was impressed with the standard ol' marching and congratulated the headmaster on tlie inauguration O'f the competitions which, he said, were quite novel. He remarked on the fine carriage of the children, which indicated thorough and consist-, cut. training. Mr Wentworth is also greatly interested in music, and was pleased to. learn that the school possessed a full band and orchestra.
