WOMAN FALLS FROM WHARF. (BY TELEGRAPH Pit 1588 ASSOCIATION. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 15. As the Manuka was leaving Lyttelton on Saturday night a sensation was caused when a woman, who was waving goodbye to friends on the steamer, fell over the wharf into the water. .But for the smart action of the master of the steamer in stopping the propeller a tragedy might have occurred. The woman was rescued by her husband and a seaman. FIRE INQUIRY AT HAMILTON. HAMILTON, Aug. 15. The coronial inquiry into the destruction by fire of a four-roomed cottage at Hamilton owned by Frederick Geo. Sanders was concluded to-day, when the Magistrate found that the house was wiliullv fired by some person unknown. While suspicion rested on the owner, it went no further. FIRE BRIGADE DOES GOOD WORK. TAUMARUNUI, Aug. 15. At 3.40 on Sunday morning fire broke out in a dwelling, with shop attached, occupied by Mrs. M. Paul and owned by A. Lee.se and S. Williams. The brigade was quickly on the scene and made a brilliant save, confining the damage to the front portion of the building. The stock in the shop, stationery, fruit, and confectionery, was considerably damaged by smoke and water. The building was insured for £675, the contents of the house for £250, and the stock and fittings for £350. INTEREST ON CANTEEN FUNDS. AUCKLAND. Aug. 15. At a meeting of returned soldiers today it was decided unanimously that the Auckland proportion of the interest on the canteen fund, £IOOO, should be retained to assist married men with families in cases of unemployment, the Poppy Day funds being practically exhausted.
