-* Mr. P. W. Mad dock, provincial representative of Metro-Goldwy il Enin,*.. . visiting Hiawera to make arrangements for the screening of the film “The Great Parade.”

Mrs. C. M Haggett returned last night from Wanganui where she attended the funeral of her mother, Mrs. 11. L. Christie, whose death occurred on Tuesday. Mr J. Cardwell, who has been in charge of the job printing department of “The Hawera Star” for the last two years, was met yesterday by representatives of all departments, prior to his leaving to take up another appointment, and presented with a gold-mounted fountain pen, suitably engraved, and a silver cigarette case. Mr H. C. Collier made the presentation, and in doing so he referred to the very high esteem in which the recipient was held by his fellow employees, and wished him success and happiness in his future. Several others of those present also took the opportunity to express regret at Mr Cardwell’s departure, and wished him health and prosperity, and Mr Cardwell suitably responded.

Mr and Mrs F. H. Miller, who are leaving for Taumarunui in the near future, were met by representatives of the Hawera, Eltham and Auroa Pipe Bands, Provincial Scottish Society and friends in the Foresters’ Hall last night, where an enjoyable social and dance was held. Mr Miller, who has done much to assist the local, band, and who was largely responsible for organising it, was the recipient of a cheque for a] substantial sum.' In making the presentation, Mr W. Gr. Simpson, on behalf of the Scottish Society, referred in eloquent terms to the popularity of the- guests, who, he said, -would carry with them the goodwill of many. Mr H. N. Freeman, on behalf of Mr Miller’s fellow eiflployees, and Messrs C. Bone and D. Ward, on behalf of the band, supported the previous speaker. Mr Miller feelingly replied, and voiced his and Mrs Miller’s regrets at leaving so many loyal friends. During the evening a dainty supper was served by the ladies.
