Tlie Consolidated Fund, it is estimated, lias now benefited by £ll6B, as the result of the raid on the premise® of Alfred Vivian Whitta, a bookmaker, and the prosecution of his clients. Three, more of the latter appeared to-day, being fined £9 in all.
GIRL REMANDED FOR SENTENCE.
CHRISTCHURCH, June 2,
When Nancy Hastings Carr, wdio was found guilty of the. theft of £1892, appeared for sentence to-day, her counsel mad© an appeal for probation on the ground of the girl’s genera l , good character.
Mr Justice' Adams remanded her till Monday to consider the question.
VALUELESS CHEQUES ADMITTED
WELLINGTON, June 2. An accountant, Sydney Rowland Grover, aged 33, wdio lias been in New Zealand only two and a half years, today pleaded guilty to issuing valueless cheques and obtaining £l4 in money and goods.
Mr Page, S.M., deferred ,sentence until after receiving the probation officer’® report.
APPEAL DISMISSED
AUCKLAND, June 2
The Chief Justice (Sir Charles Skerrett) dismissed an appeal by Dr, Raynor, managing director of Dixieland Cabaret, against his conviction on a charge of allowing liquor to be consumed in the cabaret.
Sir Charles said that although Raynor was not present on the night referred to in the charge, he had acquiesced in, consented to, or impliedly authorised the kind of business conducted in the cabaret.
