ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

CANADIANS AT PALMERSTON NORTH.

MANAWATU EASILY DEFEATED'

(by telegraph—press association.)

PALMERSTON N., June 1. The Canadian Soccer team defeated Mamaiwatu to-day by ,six goals to mil. The game was below expectations. The “Maple Leafers”. could have inflicted a bigger defeat, although the team they put in- -the field wo® perhaps the weakest yet, probably in view of the coining Wellington game for which they are no doubt reserving tlieir best players. The playing conditions to-day were good, there being an almost entire absence of wind, and the sun conveniently disappeared behind the clouds from time to time. The Canadian forward line combined well, Maiuawatu saving goals by clustering.iromidi the goal and successfully getting in the way of the ball. The iheadworlc for which the Canadians had earned an enviable reputation was not much in evidence, their play for the most part consisting of clever passing I>y -the forwards, iand luard kicking by the full-backs. Only occasionally was the Maple Leaf goalie called upon to abandon hi® restful pose against the goal-post. ‘Half-time ended with « Mamawatu forward movement which was almost successful. Play livened up to some extent in the second half, but again the Canadians bad the major share, of the ball and were evidently taking things easy.
