MOKOIA SPORTS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —1' would like, very briefly., u> reply to “Witness” regarding his complaints in connection with above. Hi the first place 1 would prefer replying to one writing over their own name, and secondly many of his complaints could have been made direct to the committee, who are only too pleased to receive suggestions for the purpose of improving arrangements m connection with the sports. The gate charge of 2s is the main object of “Witness' '' remarks, and it seems to me that the * 'spoils ’ now-a-days want all v their sport- for nothing. The shield, though advertised at ten guineas, cost nearly twenty guineas, and a fifteen guinea cup has been added to the runners-up besides seven gold medals and one would think the honour and glory of winning such trophies would be the aim of football' enthusiasts. I don’t know who informed “Witness” that the winners of the medals had to pay for the inscription thereon or for the engraving of the name of the team on the shield, but both are contrary to fact. I am also certain the winning team were admitted free to receive presentation of the shield at the concert. I would also like to inform “Witness’ ’ that the refreshment tent is run by the ladies and quite independent of the association, so that if he applies to them in his winning way he might induce them to supply the free cup of tea. ;

All members of the association and ladies pay far admission to the grounds even though they work hard 'for the enjoyment of others, but perhaps the new' committee which .will be farmed before next sports meeting -will consider the propositions put forward by “Witness;” but, personally, I consider the expenses of any team very light, considering the object in view. ■The Settlers’ Association has had to creep before it walks as regards its finance, but that does not mean that it is going to crawl. I do not mean to be> drawn further into the correspondence columns with regard to the affairs of the Settlers’ Association, but can assure “"Witness” and any like-minded that all complaints or suggestions made through the secretary or myself will receive prompt and courteous attention. I am, etc.,

D. S. RICHARDSON, President Mokoia Settlers’ Association
