PERSONAL ITEMS.

The Hon. J. G. Coates announced yesterday that two important appointments had been made in -the -railway service. Mr J. Brown becomes superintendent of the staff in succession to Mr B. A. Morris, who is .retiring on superannuation. Mr E. Casey’s appointment as divisional superintendent for the North' Island (in Mace of Mr' W. H. Hales, wfio has retired on superannuation) is l confirmed.

Mr W. H Robertshaw, formerly on the staff of the Bank of Australasia in Hawera, has been promoted to be manager at Wanganui. Mr. A. C. St. Paul also fin ex-Hawera officer, has succeeded Mr. Robertshaw at Feilding. Messrs. N. E. McKenzie, T. J. Griffin and W. A. Ballantyne, inspectors for the Taranaki Education Board, are at present on their regular visit of inspection to the Hawera school and will remain in town until Friday. They are located at the Egmont Hotel. Mr A. H. Holl, who was drowned while attempting to ford a stream 1 on Mount ltuapehu on Friday, was. well known in Auckland as the principal of the University Coaching College.. He was born in England, and took his B.A. degree with honours in mathematics at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, After teaching in English public schools for some time he came to Auckland, where he established the University Coaching College in 1912. He was a brilliant, mathematician, and compiled a widely-read book for matriculation candidates. Probably no amateur alpinist in New Zealand had more experience in climbing than he had. He knew - the National Park from end to end, was a member of the Ruapehu Ski Club and tlie Tongariro National Park Sports Club. Before coming to New Zealand he performed several notable feats in the north of England and Switzerland. He was a member of the famous Alpine Club. He climbed extensively in the Southern Alps, and 1 reached the .summit of Mount Cook twice within a fortnight, a distinction not attained by any other amateur in New Zealand.
