POLITICS IN IRELAND.

MULTIPLICITY OF PARTIES

ELECTIONS NEXT MONTH

“We have long mourned the possession of an unopposed Government party; mow with so many pjarties contesting the seats at the elections in June there is a possibility of the Free State endowing itself with coalition government,” writes a X>ublin correspondent. Mr Cosgrove, Mr Kevin O’Higgins and others are making wild promises in the hopes or regaining their seats and position in the Cabinet, \yhidh carry salaries of thousands- “ The Government-have a ! few good men. Labour .stands high, while the Republicans could, if they desired, recapture almost a majority. The new parties are the farmers’ pity ties, wljich are an important factor, and many members who were attached to the Government are now joining this group.

“The group which broke away from the Government party last year, and which was joined by Mr Dan Breen a short time ago, has a good' following, and will be supported ; while the Republicans are sure of <at least 50 per cent and much more if they Would promise to take their seats like Breen. The farmers- have two parties, each sure of a certain quota. The result is sure to be a medley. “So far there exists: The Government party, the Independent group, the Republican party, the Labour party, two farmers’ parties, and the party which has separated itself from the Government and which may combine either with the National or the Independent groups.
