CAR FALLS INTO RIVER

A tragedy was narrowly averted on the Awakino Valley Road on Tuesday afternoon, when a motor-car left the road and fell 35 feet into the deep water of the Awakino River. The car was occupied by a motorist from Palmerston North whoso name is unknown, and liis wife and two children. The steering gear broke and the car deflected towards the edge of the cliff, but the occupants managed to jump out before the vehicle fell. All were hurt-MOTOR-CARS COLLIDE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 27. An alarming collision which was fortunately not attended by loss of life, or personal injury, occurred on the Howick Road this morning between two motorcars:-. Mr John Finlay was driving in the direction of the city and, near the Pnnmure bridge, he pulled up on seeing another car approaching from the opposite direction. A smash was inevitable, however, and the moving car struck the other vehicle turned a complete somersault, and was badly damaged. The axle of Mr Finlay’s car was smashed and other damage was done, but -it was able to jiroceed on its journey. Some hours elapsed before the other car could be moved.,**
