(From Our Own Correspondent.)

ODDFEI .LOWS ’ DISTRICT OFFICERS VISIT. A function of outstanding interest to Oddfellows is set down for February Fl. wliou the district officers of the organisation will visit Kaponga. The prmeipal subject for discussion will be the consolidation of sick funds. P.P.fcLM., l>ro. C. 15. Bellrin M.P., will address the "assemblage, and the annual balancesheet and report will be presented. A large attendance of local Oddfellows is anticipated. TENNIS CLUB DANCE. The Kaponga Tennis Club’s dance, f o be hold on February 4, gives promise of being a sociable and pleasant function Plaving flannels will flgure largelv in the atttirc of those present, and the programme will be interspersed with novelty dances. A sumptuous supper and good orchestra arc announced. PEVEN-A-SIDE RUGBY TOURNAMENT. The annual. Kaponga seven-a-side Rugby tournament (perhaps the most important fixture of its kind in the North Island), for the Casey Shield, will eventuate on Easter Saturday as usual. Mr A. Melville, secretary of the sports club, which controls the event, has received promising indications 'of increased support, and among those may be mentioned a letter from the Napier Pirates Football Club (last year’s winners of the trophy). The club intends sending a strong team to defend the shield. It will be remembered that A. E. Cooke, New' Zealand’s brilliant five-eighths, captained the team which won last year at Kaponga. It is Cooke’s intention to accompany the team from Napier this year. Dr. M. M. Hockin, who played brilliant Rugbv in his university days in Dunedin, announces his intention of presenting a silver cup, to be held for one year by the runners-up in the annual Casey Shield tournament. The greatly improved surface of Victoria Parle should bo the means of attracting a substantial increase in entries for the' Cascv Shield. The transformation 'already effected on the playing ground could be still further advanced by rolling after heavy rains. A suitable roller is available, and with the assitsance of a few well-disposed settlers and their teams, the necessary work could be expeditiously and cheaply carried out. Such an opportunity to level the surface,' while the ground is still comparatively soft after recent working, may never again present itself. GENERAL. Several members of the local fire brigade are assiduously practicing in preparation for the W.F.B.A. annual demonstration to be held at Stratford in March. They intend competing in the majority of events. An instance of smart workmanship was this week exemplified at a local garage, when a visitor to the mountain was halted by engine trouble. In thirtyfive minutes” three mechanics removed the cylinder-head, sump inspection plate, piston and connecting rod, fitted new connection rod to piston, fitted bigend bearing, cleaned oil sump and cylinder-head, re-assembled the latter and inspection plate, and re-filled with oil.

A mild sensation was created yesterday afternoon by the sudden startling of a horse which was tied to a verandah post at Mr 11. Hawke’s shop. The bridle rein was strong enough to resist the horse’s pull, but the heavy Wooden post was literally “torn out by the roots” and fell across a stationary motor-car in which were seated a lady and two children. Luckily the hood of the car was up, otherwise the occupants would have sustained serious injury. The horse then bolted with the post in tow, but was smartly captured before committing damage. At the first of a series of euchre parties and fiances inaugurated by St. Mark’s Church, which was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening, a full attendance greeted the efforts of the promoters and a very enjoyable entertainment resulted. Tournament prizes were won by Mrs T. T. Jones and Mr A. J. Herbert. Refreshments were served by the Guild, and dancing was continued until a late hour.
